Kings and Reds on the Naknek

2020 Bear Trail Lodge Bristol Bay king salmon Naknek

Beautiful weather and plenty of fish made for one spectacular July trip to Naknek River! For this trip, we were joined by 7 incredible ladies. The skills levels ranged from ladies who had never fly fished before to ladies that have intermediate fly fishing abilities. We flew into the town of King Salmon, Alaska within the Bristol Bay region. The remote area was full of wildlife and untouched Alaskan terrain. King and Red Salmon were our target species for the trip, and boy they did NOT disappoint! We used gear on the boat to target King Salmon and fly rod to fish for Red Salmon. All of our participants were able to limit out each day on Red Salmon and everyone took home at least one King Salmon from the trip! Bear Trail Lodge provided all meals: Breakfast, lunch (on the river), and dinner which were delicious, home cooked appetizer and meals ranging from crab dip to King Salmon with a scrumptious dessert to follow each evening. The beverage area is open all day and evening to ensure you are always properly hydrated!

Day to Day

The first evening that the ladies arrived we got settled into our lodging and enjoyed dinner while we got acquainted with the lodge and surroundings. We headed to bed, ready for what the next day would bring!

On day 2 of the trip we woke up early, enjoyed breakfast and headed out to the Naknek by 7am to target Red Salmon. The Salmon were schooled up and prolific as we enjoyed a sunny morning on the water! After limiting out we enjoyed lunch on the side of the river and then traveled back down river to fish for King Salmon until we went back to the lodge for dinner and socializing. Later in the evening, some ladies enjoyed fly tying in the common area of the lodge with support from one of our guides.

Day 3 began with another early morning on the water. The weather was a bit more cloudy but still warm. On this day we briefly targeted King Salmon while we traveled up river. We returned to the same spot on the river for Red Salmon fishing and limited out quickly again. On the trip back towards the lodge we witnessed a young bear swimming in the Naknek and fishing for lunch. It was a site to be seen! Once we arrived back to the lodge after a second successful day of fishing we had another delicious meal, swapped adventurous stories from the day and enjoyed each others company!

The last day of our trip we split up boats dependent on which species ladies were interested in targeting. We had half a day to get a few more Salmon for our freezer and feel the tug of that fly line that we all enjoy so much before having to take the shuttle back to the local airport. We enjoyed a smooth flight back to Anchorage, Alaska; said our bittersweet goodbyes and parted ways, hopeful to see each other again on the water!

Favorite Memory

One of our guides, Brittney, joined the infamous Naknek swim team twice throughout the trip while fly fishing for Red Salmon and netting Salmon for ladies on the trip. She often finds humor in these moments and believes that moments like this make up the genuine experience of the sport! Its also a great reminder why its important to always come prepared with an extra change of clothing and safety equipment for the water!
