Trip Reports 2014

Terrific Spring Tubing 2014 Spring came very early to Alaska this year, which meant that the ice went off the lakes sooner than usual, and that made for absolutely excellent float tubing conditions! The weather was great, except for some intermittent smoke haze from a large fire burning on the Kenai Peninsula, and the fish were very cooperative. We started out on a lake that is usually good fishing in the spring, because it is also the best location to help beginning float tubers learn about the equipment, how to paddle, and how to approach the fish. It's a popular...

Trip Reports 2013

2013 Beautiful Baja Saltwater Fly Fishing The tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico was a maelstrom of winds when we arrived. Fronds were ripping off the palm trees, the swimming pool actually had waves in it, the sand was whirling up off the beach in clouds, and the surf was pounding like a giant at the front door of the hotel. Needless to say, we weren't going fishing for a while. We settled in at the lovely Rancho Leonaro resort and started things off with their wonderful margaritas and a Mexican buffet for dinner. Retiring to our large and...

Trip Reports 2012

Awesome Argentina, 2012 Although volcanic eruptions in Chile continued to send ash-laden air into Argentina from time to time, we still had a great time on this year’s January trip. Luckily, the fishing was not affected, and we all caught rainbow and brown trout just as large and just a feisty as in past years.   We started out the adventure with a three-day camping trip on the Alumine and Collon Cura rivers. High winds drove us off the water and into camp, one afternoon, but a few hours later it was so calm that the bugs were biting! The...

Spring Tubing at Adventure Denali, 2017 While the weather was not the best for our spring outing at Adventure Denali this year, the good fishing made up for it. The wind increased as we put the tubes together and got ready, but the gusts were so strong that we opted for a walk around the lake and a visit with Kirk Martakis the owner. Finally, the wind calmed down and we quickly pulled on our waders and made for the water. None of the three anglers had ever been in a float tube, so the first hour or so was...

Trip Reports 2016

Tubing Tales 2016 This year’s float tubing days were as much fun as always despite a pair of flippers that refused to perform, and schools of fish that weren’t where they usually are. We started off as always with some pick-up & lay down casts for first timers before I set them up in front of some old logs at the edge of the lake that always have fish nearby. It wasn’t long until everyone began to report “bumps” that signaled fish activity, but that didn’t always result in “takes”. The anglers were a determined bunch and with a little...
